20-year-old Ben Evans from Staplescross successfully defended the Faldo Series grand final today at the Celtic Manor Resort, finishing with a three-round total of 204, six under par for the tournament.
After two days of impressive golf from a field made up of some of the best young golfing talent from both the European Faldo Series and the Faldo Series Asia, Ben finished with a one under par 69 to win by two strokes. Ben's back-to-back wins put him in very good company, as he becomes only the third person in Faldo Series history to successfully defend his title alongside the European Tour's Oliver Fisher and the winner of last week's Alfred Dunhill Links Championship, Nick Dougherty.
Ben commented after his win: "I'm very pleased to be the 2007 Faldo Series champion and to have defended my Faldo Series title; it's great to be mentioned alongside those players who have achieved the same feat in the past. Nick has been great company this week and it was good to get a chance to put questions to him and Nick Dougherty last night." Ben was referring to the Faldo Series 2007 gala dinner on Wednesday night, at which Nick Faldo presented Nick Dougherty with the inaugural Faldo Series Achievement Award.
Faldo commented: "Ben is a very deserving winner with a big future ahead of him. I also want to thank our special guests, DJ Spoony, Kiran Matharu and Nick Dougherty, who have all kindly given their support the Faldo Series. 2007 has been our biggest season to date and I look forward to a new season in which we hope to create even more opportunities for these talented young golfers."
